THE ART OF COMPOSITION

Distinct voices. A shared sensibility.

Teaphonic composes tea as musicians bring distinct voices into balance. Qi Weizhong works through the tension between a plane and a curve. FERMATA brings these practices to the same table.

Duo for Banzhang Ancient Tea Trees

Two trees. Two voices. A character held between them.

A first-spring raw Pu’er composition from two ancient trees: a sweet-tea tree in Laomane and a native Banzhang tree. The maker takes inspiration from Kodály’s duo for violin and cello, refining the interaction between two strongly individual sources.

Triple Concerto for Laobanzhang Ancient Tea Trees

Bitterness, fragrance, sweetness. Three voices in concert.

From three distinct plots in the core Old Banzhang tea area, spring leaves from Man’e, Pasha and native Banzhang trees are prepared separately, then blended. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto gives the work its structure: three characters, each distinct, held together in proportion.

BEFORE THE COMPOSITION

The forest comes first.

The shape of a leaf. The character of a tree. Before the blending, there is the patient work of knowing the source.
